Staff recommends the City Council approve the Police Department joining a fully funded Regional Real Estate Fraud Task Force operated by the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.

BACKGROUND:
The Riverside County District Attorney will be staffing three Regional Real Estate Fraud Task Forces throughout the County. The offices will be in Indio, Riverside and Murrieta. The District Attorney will supervise, manage and train the allied Detectives assigned to this task force. The task force will participate in joint law enforcement activities to identify, investigate, and apprehend those persons committing real estate fraud.
Regional task force members will focus on educating the community about ways to prevent fraud via public outreach programs. Task force members will provide frequent updates to the public, including those in the real estate industry, by focusing on current fraud trends and providing information on how to avoid and protect themselves from various fraud schemes.
The task force's public education campaign will include information regarding available services and resources to administer assistance, as well as provide outside counseling opportunities for those who fallen victim to real estate fraud related crimes.
DISCUSSION:
All task force members' salaries, benefits, training expenses, and overtime shall be funded via the Real Estate Prosecution Trust Fund by the Riverside County District Attorney's Office, pursuant to Government Code Section 27388. The only ongoing expense for the task force detective will be a Department unmarked vehicle, fuel and maintenance costs for the unit.
