Body

BACKGROUND:

The Cathedral City High School (CCHS) Theater Department has asked the City to sponsor a location to perform "Romeo and Juliet" as part of a "Shakespeare in the Park" event.

DISCUSSION:

The idea of the "Shakespeare in the Park" came up recently during a Parks and Community Events Commission meeting.  Commissioner Schechter has since been working with Ray Franz, the director of CCHS Theater Department to find a viable space for the high school students to perform "Romeo and Juliet."  It was determined that the Civic Center Rotunda offered an outdoor atmosphere and protected guests from the elements of the weather.  The Rotunda also offered adequate electrical power.  McDonald's has come to the table with a generous donation to help provide costumes and sets.

The theater department will offer one performance on June 4, 2016 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Set-up would occur on the same day at 3:00 pm and teardown by 10:00 pm.  They expect no more than 500 people.  They do plan to serve food and have amplified sound; however, based on past events, sound coming from the Rotunda does not affect any significant number of people living in the CC Cove.  Since the City would like to sponsor the event, staff recommends waiving the $510 application fee.  The school district will provide insurance covering the City as an additional insured.   No alcohol will be allowed or served.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No significant fiscal impact to the City.
