BACKGROUND:

Once again, the Cathedral City Rotary and the Palm Springs Unified School District Foundation have teamed together and invited the City of Cathedral City to co-sponsor Passport to Health: Health Fair and Glo Run on Saturday, May 7th from 5 pm to 10:30 pm.

DISCUSSION:

The organizers plan to hold an early evening health fair which invites local health and community based organizations to provide information about improving one’s health through exercise, nutrition, and health monitoring.  The Health Fair would take place on the Festival Lawn and begins at 5:00 pm. It will feature health screenings, exercise demonstrations, nutrition demonstrations, and the popular addition of health food trucks. Admission to the health fair is free.

Body paint stations open at 6:00 pm, as participants get ready for the 5K/1M Glo Fun Run that starts in front of City Hall around 8:00 pm.  Similar to last year, the Glo Run expects over 1,500 registered participants who will run or walk the downtown course that begins at City Hall and ended at City Hall.  All net proceeds from the run registration will benefit PSUSD Foundation that offers students assistance and scholarships.  The run is in the evening and runners “glow” as they maneuver through the downtown streets.  Visually, it is a great event that attracted KMIR to the television sponsor.

After the Glo Run, a celebration occurs around Civic Center Plaza and Town Square where music, dancing, and people gather to enjoy the completion of the race. The celebration ends approximately at 10:30 pm.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The group is asking for $5,000 in-kind sponsorship of city services such as public works, police and fire support.
