RECOMMENDATION:

Recommendation

Staff recommends the City Council approve the recommendation of the Public Arts Commission to purchase the 2/3 size sculpture “Protector” from Brodin Studios honoring fallen heroes in an amount not to exceed $32,000.

Body

BACKGROUND:

At the March 2018 Public Arts Commission meeting, Chief Walker presented a proposal for the purchase of a fallen hero sculpture which would honor two Cathedral City Officers, Officer David Vasquez and Officer Jermaine Gibson, who lost their lives while in the line of duty.   The fallen hero sculpture would honor both officers, their families, the Police Department and would give the families and the officers children and grandchildren a place to come and pay their respects.  The sculpture would also serve as a reminder to our community that our officers are on duty putting their lives on the line to protect ours, every day.

DISCUSSION:

June 11, 2018 the Public Arts Commission approved a recommendation on the size and funding for the sculpture project.    The Commission’s recommendation is to purchase the 2/3 sculpture and to allocate $12,000 from the Public Arts Funds towards the total cost of the fallen hero’s sculpture.

At the August 13, 2018 Public Arts Commission meeting, the Commission voted to recommend the purchase of the sculpture design “Protector” and a recommendation to place the sculpture along Avenida Lalo Guerrero between City Hall and the parking structure (replace Swiss Cheese).  If approved, Swiss Cheese will be moved to a new location.   The price for “Protector” is $27,000 (sculpture) $1,000 (transportation) $4,000 (installation, plaques).

Total cost not to exceed $32,000.  $12,000 would be funded by Public Arts fund, Chief Walker will secure private funding to cover the balance.  If approved, the sculpture could be ready by the end of October.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Total cost not to exceed $32,000.  $12,000 would be funded by Public Arts fund, Chief Walker will secure private funding to cover the balance.
