Body

BACKGROUND:

On January 13, 2016, the City Council approved a Design Professional Services Agreement with Graphic Solutions (Consultant) to develop and implement a comprehensive Citywide Sign Program.  Graphic Solution's goal is to work collaboratively with City stakeholders in designing a wayfinding program that is beneficial to the City's residents and visitors.  A Sign Committee was formed and the Consultant has prepared several design options based on their input.  These options are now being presented to the City Council and to each of the City's commissions for review and discussion (Attachment 1).

DISCUSSION:

The purpose of the Citywide Wayfinding Sign Program is to unify and consolidate the City's entryway signs, vehicular directional signs, and downtown directory signs.  Standardizing the City's public wayfinding signs will benefit the community by improving its overall appearance and provide residents and visitors with readily identifiable information in a coordinated format.  To assist in building consensus for a preferred design, a Sign Committee comprised of two members from the City Council and each of the City's commissions was formed.  The City Council representatives are Councilmember Shelley Kaplan and Councilmember Mark Carnevale (see Attachment 2).

The Sign Committee met in February and in early March and, as a result of their input during a Sign Preference Survey and their feedback on the Consultant's initial sign design concepts, the Consultant has prepared updated concepts for review and discussion by the City Council and each of the commissions.  The Consultant will further refine the draft design concepts and prepare a complete sign package for consideration by the City Council in late spring based on the input received during these meetings, which are being held throughout the month of March, as well as additional discussion by the Sign Committee at their April meeting.

The Consultant has prepared an entryway option designed to work with the existing art element pedestals where they occur at or near the City's entrances (Attachment 1, "A").  Two other entryway options have also been created (Attachment 1, "B1" and "C1").  Several variations on these two themes are also included to allow for possible space limitations within existing public right-of-ways and/or financial limitations due to fabrication costs (Attachment 1, "B2", "B3" and "C2", "C3", and "D3").  The three options for vehicular directory signs reflect the design elements provided in the related entryway options (Attachment 1, "B4", "C4" and "D4").

The Consultant has asked each of the Sign Committee members to provide the draft sign design concepts to their respective commissions and council for review and discussion.
