End
FROM:
Pat Milos, Community Development Director
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation
Receive an update, review and discuss Cathedral City Municipal Code 9.100.30 and provide staff direction.
Body
BACKGROUND:
Cathedral City Municipal Code restricts the ownership of Pigs and other livestock as follows:
9.100.030 Pigs and Livestock.
A., It is unlawful to keep any pig, hog, sheep, bull, stallion, mare, cow, burro, jack, jenny, mule, goat, kid, horse or similar animal in the city except that such animals may be kept in an RE (Residential Estate) zone not to exceed a total combination of three and providing all of them are kept at least sixty feet from any property line and forty feet from the residence of the property in which they are kept.
DISCUSSION:
Over the past couple of decades owning and domesticating various species of pigs as pets has become an accepted trend nationally.
The Municipal Code currently prohibits the ownership of pet pigs in all but the Residential Estate (RE) zoning areas which are located exclusively in the North City Specific Planning Area.
Earlier this year the City Code Compliance Department received a complaint related to a resident owning a Pet Pig.
Code Compliance responded to the address and found no code violations other than the prohibited pet Pig, in fact the record indicates that the property was "very nice and neat" however, the owners of the pig received a Notice and order to Abate. As a result, the owners are requesting that the City Council consider amending the Municipal Code to allow for "Pet Mini Pigs".
FISCAL IMPACT:
There are no related Fiscal Impacts
