Title
2018 California Office of Traffic Safety Grant
End
FROM:
Paul S. Wilson, Fire Chief
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation
Staff recommends the City Council approve a fire department grant application to the California Office of Traffic Safety for $41,000. The 2018 grant would provide funding for the replacement of the extrication tools (Jaws of Life) and add vehicle stabilization struts carried on the fire department ladder truck.
Body
BACKGROUND:
The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) provides grants for emergency equipment used on state and federal highways. The fire department provides initial emergency response services to Interstate 10 and mutual aid to connecting state roadways.
DISCUSSION:
The fire department Truck 412 extrication tools are twenty-nine years old and need to be replaced, as they have reached the end of their service life. Vehicle stabilization struts are new equipment to increase patient and rescuer safety.
The tools requested in the OTS grant application will enable firefighters to extricate trapped persons in half-the-time currently spent on the same task.
The replacement cost of these unique emergency tools was not funded in the fire department 2017/18 operating budget. The OTS grant, if awarded, would cover the replacement cost of the new extrication tools.
The fire department appreciates the on-going support of the California Office of Traffic Safety.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact to the City to apply for or accept the California Office of Traffic Safety grant.
