FROM:
Paul S. Wilson, Fire Chief
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation
Staff recommends the City Council ratify two grant applications awarded to the fire department in 2016. A California Office of Traffic Safety Grant for $20,000.00 and a 2016 Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Grant for $20,243.48. The 2016 grant awards provided funding for the replacement of two extrication units (Jaws of Life tools).
Body
BACKGROUND:
The fire department applied for a California Office of Traffic Safety Grant in January 2016. The California Office of Traffic Safety grant for $20,000.00 was awarded in October 2016.
The fire department applied for a Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation Grant in September 2016. The Firehouse Subs grant for $20,243.48 was awarded in November 2016.
The fire department took delivery of both grant funded extrication units in December 2016.
DISCUSSION:
The fire department's previous extrication tools, which were twenty years old, needed to be replaced, as they had reached the end of their service life. The newer tools enable firefighters to extricate persons trapped in half the time currently spent on the same task.
The replacement cost of these unique emergency tools was not funded in the fire department 2016/17 capital equipment replacement budget. The grants awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety and the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation covered the complete replacement cost of both the new extrication units.
The fire department appreciates the support of the California Office of Traffic Safety and the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact to the City as a result of accepting these grant funds.
