RECOMMENDATION:

Recommendation

Approve the Purchase of a Sculpture from Artist Ignazio Gomez honoring Lalo Guerrero in the amount not to exceed $56,688.50.

Body

BACKGROUND:

At the June 29th Cathedral City Council Meeting, Alan Carvalho, Co-Chairperson of the Public Arts Commission presented a proposal to purchase an art piece to honor Lalo Guerrero.

This project would honor Guerrero, a Chicano artist and local hero, with a bronze sculpture on his 100th birthday, which also coincides with the City’s celebration of its 35th Anniversary.

The Lalo Guerrero family recommends and the Public Arts Commission concurs to commission the work of artist Ignazio Gomez to produce the sculpture.

DISCUSSION:

During the June 29th Study Session discussion the City Council showed unanimous support for the procurement of the recommended art piece, however there were concerns with the Arts Commission's proposal to allocate 10% of the overall Pubic Arts fund towards the purchase of the Lalo Guerrero sculpture and request that City Council allocate general  funds for the remaining balance.

The City Council directed Co-Chairperson Carvalho and staff to take the item back to the Arts Commission to solicit support for funding the entire purchase (100%) using the Art in Public Places fund.

The item was taken back to the Public Arts Commission for consideration at the July 11th 2016 meeting and was discussed and approved by a unanimous vote.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The project will be funded by the Arts in Public Places fund in the amount not to exceed $56,688.50.
