Body

BACKGROUND:
The Public Arts Commission began discussing the possibility of purchasing an art piece to honor Lalo Guerrero in 2015. This project would honor Guerrero, a Chicano artist and local hero, with a bronze sculpture on his 100th birthday, which also coincides with the City's celebration of its 35th Anniversary.

DISCUSSION:
At the June 2016 Public Arts Commission Meeting, the Commission directed Co-Chairman, Alan Carvalho, to present a proposal to the City Council to purchase a bronze sculpture to honor Lalo Guerrero. The following is their proposal:
The Lalo Guerrero family recommends that the Commission work with artist Ignazio Gomez to produce the sculpture. Gomez provided a budget of $53,135 for the production and installation of a Lalo Guerrero sculpture.
The Public Arts Commissioners were presented with two drawings of Lalo Guerrero, the younger version of Lalo Guerrero facing up was selected by the Commission for the sculpture.
The Commission also discussed allocating 10% of the overall Pubic Arts fund towards the purchase of the Lalo Guerrero sculpture. The Commission is requesting that City Council allocate funds for the remaining balance.
The following is the proposed budget:
Total Cost to Purchase Sculpture: $53,135
Contribution from the Public Arts Fund: $20,000
Contribution from City Council: $33,135
It is the desire of the Commission to purchase the sculpture honoring Lalo Guerrero in time to have it unveiled at the City's 35th Anniversary Celebration in November of this year....
