Local Ordinances and State Laws Regulating Firearms
End
FROM:
Charlie McClendon, City Manager
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation
This item is presented for information, discussion and direction only.
Body
BACKGROUND:
CM Kaplan requested a study session discussion on existing city ordinances and state laws regulating firearms.
DISCUSSION:
Regulations relating to the sale of firearms in Cathedral City are contained in Chapter 5.32 of the Municipal Code. It appears that most of the provisions of the code were adopted in 1999. Restrictions on locations where guns can be sold are fairly restrictive given that a separation of 1000 feet from a church or other religious institution, day-care center, game arcade, halfway house, residence, residential zoned area, private or public park, group home, or other firearm dealer establishment is required.
A summary of state laws related to firearms has been prepared by the Attorney General and is attached.
Council will discuss the existing regulatory structure and provide direction to staff regarding any potential additions or modifications to the local ordinance. If Council wants to make any changes they will be considered at a future Council meeting.
FISCAL IMPACT:
None.
