Title

Resignation of Arianna Menon from Parks and Community Events Commission

FROM:

Tracey R. Martinez, CMC

Deputy City Clerk

RECOMMENDATION:

Recommendation

Staff recommends the City Council accept the resignation of Arianna Menon from the Parks and Community Events Commission and direct staff on how to proceed with filling the vacancy.

Body

BACKGROUND:

Arianna Menon was appointed to serve on the Parks and Community Events Commission on August 13, 2014 to fill an unexpired term.  She was reappointed on June 10, 2015 for a term continuing to June 30, 2018.

DISCUSSION:

On April 26, 2016, Arianna Menon sent an email to Deanna Pressgrove, Environmental Conservation & Public Works Manager/Staff Liaison, indicating that she will be resigning from the Parks and Community Events Commission effective May 24, 2016.

With the resignation of Ms. Menon, the Parks and Community Events Commission will have one vacancy with a term continuing to June 30, 2018.

Pursuant to Government Code 54974, Staff will post a Notice of Vacancy, no appointment can be made sooner than 10 days after the Notice of Vacancy has been posted.

The following are two options recommended by staff that the Council may choose from to fill the unexpired term:

1.                     Accept applications and conduct interviews.  Council would need to set a deadline for applications and schedule a date to conduct interviews.

2.                     Direct Staff to contact individuals that applied in November of 2015 for the Parks and Community Events Commission, and were not appointed, to see if they are still interested in serving in that capacity.  If there are still candidates available from the November interviews Council could make an appointment based on those interviews without soliciting additional candidates or could consider those candidates along with new applicants.
