Body

BACKGROUND:

Per Ordinance 77, Municipal Code Chapter 3, Section 24, the City has a regulated Vacation Rental Program. CM Kaplan requested a study session discussion as suggested by constituent feedback.

DISCUSSION:

The purpose of the presentation is to discuss if the City should require property owners to put signage on their property identifying it as a vacation rental property. To the best knowledge of staff no other Coachella Valley cities have such a requirement, but we are told that Big Bear does require the posting of signs at vacation rental homes.

From a Public Safety standpoint there is some concern about publicly identifying vacation rentals as it may signal potential thieves that the home is vacant at least part of the time.

FISCAL IMPACT:

IN FY 14-15 the City received $221,429 in taxes and fees from vacation rentals and paid $14,400 in a professional services contract to manage the vacation rentals program.
