Body

BACKGROUND:
Councilmember Kaplan asked staff to schedule a study session item on the possible establishment of a Cathedral City Youth Commission.

The City currently has the following Boards and Commissions, which meet on a somewhat regular basis. Each Board is staffed by a City staff position responsible for preparing and posting agendas, attending the meetings, preparing and posting minutes and follow-up work on items of interest to Commission members.

1. Planning Commission - Staffed by Community Development
2. Board of Appeals - Staffed by Community Development
3. Public Arts Commission - Staffed by Community Development
4. Recreation and Community Events Commission - Staffed by the City Manager's office and Community Development
5. Finance Advisory Committee - Staffed by Administrative Services
In addition, a task force is presently working on a historic preservation ordinance, which may result in the establishment of an additional Commission that would have to be staffed.

Palm Desert reported that the Commission has been staff by a number of different departments over the years, but is currently staff through their Community Development Department.
Palm Springs, Indian Wells and La Quinta all reported that they do not have a Youth Commission. The other cities contacted did not respond.
