FROM:

Paul S. Wilson, Fire Chief

RECOMMENDATION:

Recommendation

Staff recommends the City Council receive an update on City El Niño Preparedness from Communications / Events, Fire, Police and Public Works.  No action is required, this is an information item only.

Body

BACKGROUND:

The National Weather Service is predicting an El Niño weather pattern, which could produce heavy rainfall and create the potential for flooding during the Fall of 2015 and Winter of 2016.

The City Communications / Events, Fire, Police and Public Works Divisions have coordinated preparedness information and plans for an El Niño impact.

DISCUSSION:

Communications / Events: Resident preparedness information and flooding prevention tips have been distributed and placed on the City website.

Fire: Sandbags are available for residents at City fire station locations;

36913 Date Palm Dr.

32100 Desert Vista Rd.

27610 Landau Blvd.

Police: Officers will monitor unbridged crossings, to prevent motorists from entering flooded roadways and assist with traffic control.  Dispatchers will direct callers to appropriate locations for sandbags.

Public Works:  Storm drains are cleaned on a weekly basis.  Additional sandbags are available at the Public Works yard at 68385 Kieley Road.

If flooding occurs, public works employees will barricade unbridged crossings, monitor spillways / retention areas, clear roadways and assist elderly or disabled residents with sandbag delivery.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The cost of sandbags for Fire Stations and Public Works will be covered through the existing budgets.
