Body

BACKGROUND:

On July 19, 2015 a bridge collapsed on Interstate 10 eastbound lanes just west of Desert Center.  This bridge over the Tex Wash had been deemed functionally obsolete on the national Bridge inventory in 2014.  The collapse of this bridge caused the detouring of approximately 20,000 vehicles per day off of Interstate 10 to alternate routes.  Traffic was re-opened on Interstate 10 via a temporary bypass on Friday July 24, 2015, 5 days later.  The bridge is estimated to cost $5.0 million to replace.

DISCUSSION:

As a result of the bridge collapse, City Staff reviewed the existing bridges within the City limits.  There are seven bridges within the City, six cross over stormwater channels and one over the Union Pacific Railroad.  These are listed on the Cal Trans Structural Maintenance and Investigation list attached.

In addition to the existing bridges, City Staff will provide an update on the status of the four bridge projects that are within the City Limits.  These are the Date Palm Bridge Widening Project, the Cathedral Canyon Bridge Project, the Ramon Road Bridge Widening Project and the Vista Chino Bridge Project.
