FROM:
Robert Van Nortrick, Fire Chief

RECOMMENDATION:
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the City Council approve a two year pre-hospital provider agreement with College of the Desert EMS Program.
Body

BACKGROUND:

The Cathedral City Fire Department proudly partners with College of the Desert on various programs that benefit students and provide mentoring opportunities for department members. With the approval of this agreement, students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Technician Program will be eligible to ride along with one of the city's paramedic units. This will allow the students to complete state requirements for clinical time and gain some exposure to the responsibilities associated with being an Emergency Medical Technician.
DISCUSSION:

This agreement has been reviewed by the City Attorney and outlines responsibilities through a mutual agreement of both parties involved. The College of the Desert maintains an Emergency Medical Technician Program and has certain requirements for students to gain clinical experience while enrolled in the program. The fire department will participate by allowing students to ride along on paramedic units while performing newly acquired skills. All students will abide by fire department rules and regulations including patient confidentiality and will be closely supervised by paramedics.

In the event of an accident or sudden illness involving a student, the cost of such treatment shall be covered under the College's Workers Compensation Policy. Students enrolled in the EMS Program are covered under the College's personal malpractice and liability insurance.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no fiscal impact with approving this item.
